Preparing Your Quilt

Please prepare you quilt before sending it to us.

By following these simple steps and preparing your quilt before it comes to me for quilting you can avoid extra charges if I need to do these things for you.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

  • Trim all loose threads on the back of your quilt top as the may show through light coloured fabrics
  • Trim loose threads on the top of the quilt as they will interfere with machine quilting
  • Make sure your quilt top is square. Borders must be correctly attached to prevent wavy edges or puckering and pleatingPlace a safety pin at the top of both the quilt top and backing
  • Make sure that all your seams are secure.
  • The quilt top must lay flat. Measure your quilt top across the top, middle & bottom. These three measurements should be the same . If they are not there may be puckers in your finished quilt top. Quilting does not correct piecing problems. I do my best to correct such problems as I quilt.
  • No embellishments please. Leave those until after the quiliting has been done.
  • DO NOT pin or baste your quilt top/back/batting together

  • Straighten and square your quilt backing. This ensures that the quilt loads onto the machine correctly
  • The backing must be at least 4 - 6" larger than the top on all four sides. This is a must for loading onto the machine leaders
  • If you need to piece your backing, use a 1/2" seam pressed open. Do not use the selvage as part of your backing seam. Cut the selvedge off first before piecing your backing.
  • If possible piece the backing so the seam is horizontal.
  • For best results use 100% quality cotton quilting fabric for the batting. DO NOT use cotton sheets as these can cause tension problems and broken needles.
  • If you have pre-washed your top fabrics, please pre-wash and iron the backing .
  • DO NOT pin or base your quilt top/back/batting together

  • You may purchase your batting through me or provide your own. If you provide your own batting please ensure that it is top quality.
  • I   offer a variety of battings such as Hobbs 80/20, Warm & White etc. The battings I carry all perform well and will give your quilt a nice drape.
  • If you are providing your own batting please make sure that it is at least 4 - 6 inches larger than your quilt top on all sides.
